T&E: hidden information: wrong implementation of the rules

#1 Postby zifnab » 18 Sep 2020, 09:06

part of the beauty of this game relies heavily on its "hidden information" component: it creates tension and guessing, not knowing exactly where the others stand, just TRYING to remember which color points they got a lot and most importantly the colors they lack!
remember: your end game score is the one of your lowest color.
the reveal at the end is SUSPENSEFUL to say the least!

the rules emphasizes that a few times such as p.7:

Code: Select all

Victory points are gained immediately when a tile is placed. They are kept hidden behind the players’ screens.

, and (still on the FFG) rulebook p.9 it goes on as far as to dedicate an insert all about HIDDEN INFORMATION that I'll copy/paste here:

Code: Select all

1) All victory point and treasure tokens gained and tiles behind a player’s screen are hidden information; they are kept secret from other players until scoring.
2) The number of tiles in the bag is hidden information; players cannot deliberately count the tiles in the bag.
3) Tiles that are removed from the game are hidden information; they are kept facedown in the box and cannot be viewed by any player.

I think 3) is fine (didn't look into it tbh).
but the Triqqy's in-game "STATS tab" in this game is just killing rules 1) and 2) above!!!
we know EACH color detailed victory points and treasures for all players! (we should only be able to see ours, until the game ends, where all can be revealed).
right below (still in the STATS tab) we know the exact number of tiles left in the bag!!! (the idea behind rule #2 is for a player not to know when a game will/can end, but rather have a raw guess at how much there still is in the bag: it impacts greatly your actions if you know exactly the number of tiles left so you can prevent a player from having one or two extra turns! in real life, not knowing make you try to do some cool/smart moves about it, but with a possibility that it backfires and that your assumption/feeling was totally off... which is a good thing).

SO, some hiding in this STATS tab could go a long way to get those essentials rules right and deliver the full experience the real board game provides.

yet, great job all in all!

You can just count this info on a pen and paper for each game and gain a huge advantage if it is hidden

I don't think most board game players/lovers are cheaters, on the contrary.
it's a matter of staying true to the game or playing a different game...
if you stay true, then at least you have the choice:
- honnest people can have it as intended
- dishonnest people can have the full info as you describe (pen & paper)/just as they have the full info as it is right now in plain sight.
so true to the game is the most versatile way anyway.

On second thought, I agree this should at least be an option. I find a lot of games become calculation to end the game with a one point advantage over the other person, which is not my experience playing this in real life

Seconded. I've just tried Triqqy t play T&E & the open score is a problem. I want to play casually with friends, and not being able to un-know the score feels like cheating. Open scores spoils the casual game experience, but it's good to have as an option for competitive gaming.
